WHAT IS HASHING?

Hashing is a lively blend of social jogging, hiking and partying, often playfully described as a "drinking club with a running problem". In the world of Hashing, "Hashing" refers to the activity of following a Trail marked by a "Hare". A Trail typically spans four to six miles, mostly on footpaths and bridleways and over various terrains to be found on the Isle of Wight. Due to the form it takes, Hashing is not a competitive activity.

Participants, known as Hashers, follow the Trail marked with chalk, flour or sawdust. The course includes Checks about every quarter mile or so, where slower Hashers will inevitably catch up, or pass, faster Hashers thus allowing people of all fitness levels to enjoy the run, or walk, at their own pace. Checks are marked where there are opportunities to choose various routes, only one of which will be the right way.

There are other means laid on the Trail by which the front-runners will find they have returned to the back of the Pack, and so all Hashers tend to move along the Trail together while all elements of competition are eliminated.

Hashing isn't a race but a fun, communal activity where everyone - from seasoned runners to casual walkers - can join in. It's open to anyone who can make their way down a country footpath unaided and welcomes people from all backgrounds and fitness levels. Events occur every Sunday on the Isle of Wight starting at 11:00, rain or shine, starting from a different location each week, and typically involves 20 to 40 participants.

You might hear references to "The Hash House Harriers" (or simply "The Hash") and the Isle of Wight Hash House Harriers is only one Hash of about two thousand around the world, forming a worldwide Hashing Community.

If you're interested in joining, just show up at a trail or contact the organisers listed on the website. Whether you're looking for exercise, camaraderie, or just fun and a good time, Hashing offers something for everyone!
